How to Scan Documents to PDF with Your Phone Camera (Free, No App Needed)

Turn your phone into a portable document scanner. Learn how to capture, enhance, and save multi-page scans as clean PDF files directly from your browser.

You need to submit a signed contract, but you do not own a scanner. You are at a coffee shop and need to send a copy of your ID to your bank. You are a student and want to digitize your handwritten notes before the exam.

A few years ago, you would have needed a flatbed scanner plugged into a computer. Today, the best scanner you own is already in your pocket your phone's camera.

Our Scan to PDF tool turns your phone or laptop camera into a full-featured document scanner. No app download. No sign-up. Just open your browser, point, and scan.

Why Not Just Take a Photo?

Great question. Taking a regular photo of a document has several problems:

  • Perspective Distortion: The page looks trapezoidal because you were not perfectly centered above it.
  • Lighting Issues: Shadows, glare, and uneven brightness make the text hard to read.
  • No Multi-Page Support: Each photo is a separate file you cannot combine 10 pages into one clean document.
  • Large File Size: A raw phone photo is typically 3-8MB. Ten pages? That is 30-80MB of attachments.

Our scanner helps with each of these problems.

Key Features

Crop & Straighten

Took the photo at an angle? Tap Crop on a captured page and drag the 4 dots onto the corners of the page. The tool straightens it so the document looks flat and rectangular, like a real flatbed scan. A magnifier shows the spot under your finger so you can place each corner precisely. Want the full picture instead? Tap Whole photo.

Color Options

Raw camera captures often look washed out or have a yellow tint from indoor lighting. Under "Captured Pages", choose a Color option:

  • Original: Keeps the photo as-is.
  • Grayscale: Converts to shades of gray, ideal for general documents.
  • Black & white: Black text on a clean white background. Shadows and uneven light turn white, so even small print in a shadow stays readable. Perfect for text-heavy documents.

Multi-Page Scanning

This is the killer feature. After scanning one page, tap "Scan More" and capture the next page. Keep going for as many pages as you need. With Merge all into one PDF on, all pages are combined into a single, multi-page PDF.

You can also reorder and delete individual scanned pages before saving, so you are in complete control of the final document.

How to Scan Your Document

  1. Open the Tool: Visit Scan to PDF on your phone or laptop browser.
  2. Allow Camera Access: Grant the browser permission to use your camera.
  3. Align & Capture: Hold your camera above the document and tap the capture button.
  4. Crop (optional): Tap "Crop" and drag the 4 dots onto the corners of the page.
  5. Enhance: Choose a Color option (Grayscale or Black & white usually looks best for text documents).
  6. Continue Scanning: Tap "Scan More" to add more pages to the same document.
  7. Review & Reorder: Check your scanned pages. Drag to reorder or tap the delete button to remove any bad scans.
  8. Export: Tap "Convert" and download your finished document.

Pro Tips for Better Scans

  • Use Good Lighting: Natural light near a window gives the best results. Avoid harsh overhead lights that create shadows.
  • Place on a Dark Surface: A dark desk or table creates contrast against the white paper, so the page corners are easy to see when you crop.
  • Hold Steady: Hold your phone still for a second before tapping, so the camera can focus.
  • Scan Flat: If possible, flatten any creases or folds in the document before scanning.

Works on Every Device

  • iPhone / iPad: Open Safari or Chrome and navigate to the tool.
  • Android: Works in Chrome, Firefox, and Edge mobile browsers.
  • Laptop / Desktop: Use your built-in webcam or an external camera for larger documents.
