How to Redact a PDF: Permanently Remove Sensitive Information

Covering vs. Redacting: A Critical Difference
This is the most important thing to understand about PDF redaction:

How to Mark What to Hide
Open your PDF in our editor and mark the sensitive parts directly on the page:
- Shapes: Draw rectangles, circles, or lines. Rectangles are ideal for names, numbers, and paragraphs.
- Draw: Paint freehand over handwritten notes, signatures, or irregular areas.
- Highlighter: Sweep over lines of text with a thick marker.
- Colors: Marks are black by default; you can pick another fill color.
Made a mistake? Use the Eraser, delete a mark, or press Ctrl+Z to undo. Every mark you draw comes out fully opaque in the final file.
Same spot on many pages? Use Apply to Pages to place a mark on all pages, all pages but the last, the last page, or a custom range: handy for a name in a header or an account number in a footer. There is no automatic text search, so a word that appears in different places has to be marked on each page.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Upload: Navigate to the Redact PDF tool and upload your document.

What Gets Permanently Removed?
When you save, our tool:
- Rebuilds every marked page as an image with your marks painted in. Text, images, and drawings under a mark are not hidden: they no longer exist in the file.
- Clears the document metadata (author, title, creation dates, and XMP data), which often contains the very names you are redacting.
Good to know: Because marked pages become images, their text can no longer be selected or searched (pages without marks are unchanged). Bookmark titles and file attachments are kept as they are, so check them before sharing if they could contain the hidden information.
